Buying, or selling, euros?

EURO to USD / AED: The Euro slid again yesterday against the US Dollar, dropping to below $1.22. This had a great deal to do with Germany’s announcementthat they wish to ban “short selling” of shares and euro government bonds among its 10 most important financial institutions. This was the lowest figure against the dollar since April 2006.

Most people believe the euro has further to slide against the dollar and the aed of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. If you HAVE to sell euros soon, for dollars or aed, then you may want to talk to us about setting a rate, or just buy now!

POUND TO EURO: The pound continues to hold at over 1.15, with some good news coming from the Bank of England. It looks likely that the Bank will maintain interest rates at the current low level. British businesses can take advantage of the situation, with the lowest period of borrowing at this level for some considerable time. This, in turn, will help the economy to recover at a faster rate than Europe.

POUND to US DOLLAR: With some good news coming out of the UK economy, the Pound has slowed it’s decline, but sits at an uncomfortable $1.42. Most economists believe, Sterling will go lower against the USD.

Pound Rate Cut to Just 1.5 Percent

Rates cut to all time low by Bank of England.

Rates dropped today by 0.5 percent to 1.5 percent, the lowest in the Bank’s 315-year history.

The Bank has had to balance the immediate interests of the UK economy against the potential wider economic fall-out with the distinct possibility of the currency rise of the Pound yesterday against the Dollar and the Euro, being instantly wiped out.

 This could have an immediate effect on the recent strength of the Pound. If you have Pounds to sell, it may be worth contacting our currency dealers now.

Getting Work in Dubai

Working in Dubai, and becoming an expatriate in the UAE, is a long-held ambition for many who wish to lead the expatriate lifestyle that Hong-Kong used to supply. However, the skills required for work in Dubai are more varied, and the requirements for working in Dubai, are considerably different.

Despite the appearance of a western culture, it must be said that those working in Dubai must respect the fact that it’s citizens are devout Muslims. Local cultures must be respected along with the laws. This includes the requirement to have a sponsor for your work in Dubai.

To work in Dubai, most expatriates will need to be sponsored by an employer who is based in there. If you have skills in the construction industry, finance such as banking of foreign currency transfers, or the media, then Dubai has many sponsors looking for just the right people looking to emigrate to the UAE.

Dubai, part of the United Arab Emirates, UAE, has expanded rapidly since the 1980’s with attractive salaries, tax-free wages and the opportunity to live in the city-state of Dubai which is one of the few places in the world with a “can-do” attitude at the moment.

While the other Gulf states are catching onto the idea that they too, can have tourism and business as essential ingredients within their economic mix, Dubai is currently the undisputed “Hong Kong” of the Arabian Gulf.

However, living in paradise now comes at a cost! Where wages are generally high, so follows a high cost of living. Renting a property in Dubai can be a costly exercise. Most single westerners share a rental property.

Finding work in Dubai isn’t the main problem. Getting permission to work there is the main initial objective of most would-be expats. You can visit Dubai on a 3 month tourist visa, then look for your job. Be sure that the company can sponsor you. To apply for a tourist visa, go to the British Embassy, www.uaeembassyuk.net.

Most Western expats, now working in Dubai, arrive as tourists and can usually get a tourist visa on entry. However, if you’re South African you must have a hotel booking and organise a visa before you visit. Either way, once you gain your permit to work in Dubai, you’ll need to leave the UAE, then re-enter using your work visa.

It should be noted that a work visa will tie you to one employer. If you want to change jobs within Dubai, the law requires a six month “cooling-off” period between jobs.

Some items to organise before you go:

If you think you’ll need your educational qualifications when looking for a job, get them certified by a Public Notary, your own Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UAE Embassy in your home Country. You’ll need this to make the work visa application a much faster process. Try the UAE embassy on 0870-005-6984.

Get a bank account organised. If you are going to stay on in Dubai, or anywhere in the UAE, you’ll need a bank account as it’s likely that you will be paid in Dirhams, or AED dhm, as they are known. If you’re planning on taking some savings to Dubai, use a reputable FX, currency exchange, company. They are much cheaper than the banks and they are faster. One such company is FX-Foreignexchange. They have an associate office in Dubai and have Barclays Bank as their treasury provider and help many individuals to get the best rates for Dirhams versus other currencies such as Australian and US Dollars, Bristish Pounds, the South African Rand and the Euro.

Currency Exchange, Use a Specialist

Use a specialist business to make your currency exchange and save a great deal of money. Using a bank to transfer your money abroad can be a costly, as they tend to charge commission and a transfer charge, whereas most specialist currency exchange companies rarely make these charges.

In addition, a high street bank is likely to give you a worse rate of exchange than a currency broker can.

However, currency exchange brokers differ wildly, both in terms of service and value. Like all service providers, they offer services that are similar, but the differences appear subtle yet make a vast difference to your pocket.

Most foreign exchange businesses will simply take your instructions to make the currency exchange, then transfer your money to the destination account. You need a currency broker who will take a bit more interest in your needs and will then advise on the best way to maximise the net amount from the exchange.

Here are some of the services that you could take advantage of by choosing a currency dealer carefully:

Regular payments:

If you have to make regular payments overseas such as a pension transfer, or maybe a mortgage payment, or payments to overseas suppliers, business partners, franchise operations for example, you could fix the exchange rate for as much as 2 years ahead. You could then set up the payments so that you can concentrate on other matters. The alternative is to use a dedicated currency exchange dealer, who can pick and choose when would be best for you to change your money. Neither of these services have a charge attached when you use fx-foreignexchange.

Stop loss currency exchange:

A “stop loss” contract lets you decide on a rate that you would be happy to make a currency exchange. We can arrange for the money to be exchanged as soon as a particular rate has been achieved. The money is bought automatically.

We can add to this service by placing your details with an individual dealer. That dealer will then contact you as soon as the agreed rate is achieved and you can then decide whether you wish to make the exchange. To take advantage of this particular service, you need to register with us first though as currency rates can change quickly and it takes a few minutes to register. Registration is free.

Fixed currency exchange rates:

For businesses, or individuals, that have to make a  money transfer overseas sometime within a few months, it is possible to pay a small deposit and fix the rate of exchange, then pay the final balance nearer the time of the actual transfer.

This is great for cashflow and takes the stress out of situation because you will have already fixed the rate of exchange and have ruled out the possibility of losing a great deal of money if the rate becomes unfavourable. For example, just a few months ago, the rate between the US Dollar and the GB Pound was around 2.04 Dollars to 1 Pound. The rate today is about 1.78 Dollars to the Pound. This is fine if you have dollars to sell and pounds to buy, but imagine you wanted to buy 100,000 Pounds worth of Dollars. If you had fixed the rate in advance, you would have bought $204,000. However, at if you hadn´t fixed the rate and went to change the money today, you would have received $178,000.

The difference in the exchange rate would have resulted in a loss of $26,000 !

• The Pound rose against the US dollar on Thursday, as Oil prices showed a recovery which prompted the dollar to fall.
• However, retail sales figures due at 0830 GMT are expected to show retail sales fell 0.3 percent in August, as UK shoppers shy away from the high street. A weak figure is expected to be released, therefore likely to cut back any sterling gains.
